Revision rhinoplasty is arguably the most complex aesthetic procedure in plastic surgery. Several broad categories of complications can develop following an unsuccessful primary rhinoplasty, and include external deformities and nasal obstruction.
Numerous factors can contribute to the development of rhinoplasty complications. These depend on technical considerations and execution during the primary procedure as well as on individual healing factors.
In experienced hands, revision rhinoplasty can improve the shape of the nose and re-establish airway patency. The main challenge lies in assessing the problem(s) at hand and executing a complex procedure in a previously scarred tissue bed. Tissues outside of the nose (such as ear or rib cartilage) may be needed to recreate the proper shape of the nose while providing it with sufficient strength and structure.
Revision rhinoplasty surgery requires an advanced skill-set and experience from the rhinoplasty surgeon. Dr. Mashkevich is a UCLA-trained facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, who specializes in revision rhinoplasty. Approximately a third of his rhinoplasty volume consists of revision cases. He has the training and expertise to correct a range of nasal deformities, while simultaneously restoring the airway. Having helped hundreds of patients during the past years, he understands the challenges inherent to revision rhinoplasty and can assist patients on their road to recovery.
Is Computer Imaging / Simulation Available for Revision Rhinoplasty?
Yes. During your consultation, we will take your photographs from different angles and use them to simulate proposed changes to the shape of your nose. You will have an opportunity to provide feedback and help construct your “new nose” on the computer screen. You surgical plan will then be formulated to reflect the changes you desire and are comfortable with.
Does Insurance Cover the Cost of Revision Rhinoplasty?
Yes, in select circumstances your medical insurance carrier may cover a portion of your revision rhinoplasty cost, depending on the degree of external deformity and nasal obstruction. Dr. Mashkevich has the necessary expertise to assess if your revision rhinoplasty can qualify for insurance reimbursement.
How is the Revision Rhinoplasty Procedure Performed?
Depending on the complexity of your procedure, revision rhinoplasty may last anywhere from two to six hours. Most revision cases require additional tissues for reconstruction, such as ear or rib cartilage. The need to obtain these may significantly increase the duration of your procedure.
After making nasal incisions and lifting the skin, bone and cartilage are modified to achieve the desired change(s). A splint and tape may be applied to the outside of your nose in order to assist with healing. Occasionally, nasal stents and/or packing may be used inside the nose to further maintain stability.
What is the Recovery Like following Revision Rhinoplasty? When will I be able to Return to Work?
Plan to take about a week off from work, and play it by ear after surgery. Typically, most patients are able to return to work within 10 days of surgery. We take special precautions during surgery to minimize swelling and bruising, and ask you to use ice and special creams in the immediate few days that follow.
Most patients go home on the day of surgery, and are up and about within 24 hours. If packing is placed inside the nose during surgery, it is removed the morning after. Nasal dressing, splints, and sutures are usually removed six or seven days after the surgery.
Prior to your operation, we will provide you with a detailed set of instructions from our office, and will remain available 24-7 to answer any questions, should they arise.
What about Pain after Revision Rhinoplasty?
During the surgery, you will not feel any pain due to anesthesia and sedation. After the operation, most revision rhinoplasty patients experience mild to moderate discomfort, mainly stemming from other areas (ear or chest), if they are utilized for tissue grafting. Patients typically require prescription pain medications for the first 24-72 hours, and switch to regular Tylenol thereafter.
